Casey is absolutely the most mellowest 7 yr old I know. He’s just easy going and relaxed now that he’s gained confidence in me. Playful, a bit of a goomba, but sweet, calm and willing to please at every step.
Until we moved to the new barn, I had Casey on LMF’s Showtime. I love Showtime for it’s weight gain ability while keeping the Arab types calm. Since Casey needed to gain pounds, I just automatically put him on this.
Now, with that being said, Casey is on full care at the new barn. (CP is severely allergic to hay- it leads to seizures in him, hence the decision to go full care) He is on a grain based feed that is good, but it’s grain based.
Last Friday I re-braided Casey’s mane and put his new sleezy on him. It fit well, was actually a little on the big side. He’s got a patch of mane I’m trying to train and I also didn’t want to chance that he might rub off a braid or one of his turn-out buddies might play “barber”.
That was 2 weeks after moving to the new barn and 2 weeks of the grain based feed. This past week, Casey has been acting awfully Arab-y with the head tossing and general silliness. He wasn’t easy to worm (first time I’ve wormed him since getting him), he wasn’t interested in love or pets. Just nothing. Hard to halter, lack of interest in people, avoided scritches. I was beginning to suspect the feed. As a rule, I prefer to avoid the grain based feeds. But, as a rule, I usually have hotter horses. Arabs, Morgans and Saddlebreds until now.
Last night, he expressed no interest in me until he saw I had treats. None! My cuddle pony was somehow replaced by a stand-offish alien! Luckily, CP was with me and he perceived that Casey did NOT like his sleezy. I didn’t think that could possibly be it. After all, my horse was possessed with the spirit of a naughty Arab! What would his sleezy, which is even a little on the big side have to do with head tossing and avoidance behaviors? But, I took the sleezy off anyways. And lo and behold! My cuddle pony came right back! That Arab spirit just went “poof!” and vanished!
I am fully convinced that the sleezy is inhabited by the spirit of a naughty Arab. Yep! That’s gotta be it!
