Everyone has a different philosophy, different products that they like. So, what do you feed your horses? Goats? What’s working for you? What doesn’t? What have you tried and liked? Tried and not liked?
I currently have Casey and Maddie on Strategy and local Timothy-Rye hay. Maddie seems to do best on this hay. I prefer Casey on orchard, even though Tasha had him on alfalfa. And my preferred grain is LMF, but I’m not very near a distributor anymore. Plus, the Strategy was chosen as it’s closest to what Tasha was feeding Casey (something made down in Corvallis, also not close enough for it to be realistic for me to continue feeding). They’re doing well though.
My goats are eating the same diet as the horses, with the additions of loose minerals and baking soda, free choice, for their rumen.
Before me, the pygmies thrived on loose minerals and browse, no grain. The pygoras lived on hay and sweet feed, no noticeable minerals available.
Recently, our feed store started carrying a sweet feed plus added vitamins and minerals mix. It’s supposed to be a complete feed this way. And it’s significantly less expensive than Strategy. I haven’t actually looked at the tag yet, but plan to on my next trip in to town.
Since the goats consume more grain than the horses, I’m thinking of switching them over to the sweet feed mix. Just in the thinking stages here. Part of my thoughts have to do with Moon and trying to find something she’ll eat with a bit of zest and perhaps the familiarity of a sweet feed might improve her appetite and hence her mineral consumption. The other part have to do with saving a little money.
As I said, I’m just in the thinking stages here. But I am curious, what do you feed?
